Tips for lazy Swedish learners, admit it, this is what you are looking for 😃 During my years of studying languages, I’ve learnt how to make the learning process simple and save a lot of time. So, if you’re a lazy Swedish learner, you want to build up your vocabulary or you just want to learn some new rules and words quickly, this article is for you.
En/Ett
Not sure if it’s an en or an ett word? Below you may find a few tricks that will help you to master that:
- More than 2/3 of the nouns are en words and only around 1/3 are ett words.
- 100% of the nouns that end with -ka, -la and -na are en words.
- 97% of the nouns that end with -re are en words.
- 96% of the nouns that end with –ng are en words.
- 98% of the nouns that end with –a are en words.
- 84% of the nouns that end with –g are en words.
- More than 70% of the nouns that end with -de, -te and –ag are ett words.
- Most of the nouns that describe something alive (for example a teacher, a dog) are en words (except for the child, which says a lot about the Swedes).
- Most of the nouns that have the same singular and plural form are ett words (for example ett hus).
- Words that are the same in Swedish and English
Google the words that are the same in English in Swedish. You’ll see how many of them are the same! Do you speak German or any Scandinavian language? It will be even easier to find similarities.
But be careful with using them. Of course, there is a lot of words that sound the same in Swedish and English, but also many false friends, sometimes really hilarious like full (drunk), bra (good) or puss (kiss).

Learn sentences, not words
Learning new words by heart is useless if you don’t know how to use them in a sentence. By learning sentences you memorize not only the words in a right context, but also grammar structures that you can easily recreate in other sentences.
